Cleveland Public Theatre presents the regional premiere of STANDING ON CEREMONY: THE GAY MARRIAGE PLAYS. In a series of 9 poignant, and often hilarious short plays, we take a look inside the hearts, minds and emotions attached to the polarizing issue of gay marriage in America.
The plays bounce back and forth from lesbian, to gay, to straight, to acceptance, to bigotry, to death, to life, to joy, and to pain. Thankfully, the show is also laugh out loud hilarious. I found myself crying tears of laughter, and of sadness during as I watched the stories unfold. The very talented cast flowed in and out of the individual performances flawlessly and each was memorable in every role they played.
My favorite pieces were “The Gay Agenda” and “My Husband” by Paul Rudnick and “On Facebook” by Doug Wright. The pieces are well-acted, heart-wrenching, funny and really turn the mirror on our own societal hang ups. Regardless of what side of this issue you sit on, STANDING ON CEREMONY: THE GAY MARRIAGE PLAYS is wildly entertaining and sure to leave a lasting impression.
STANDING ON CEREMONY: THE GAY MARRIAGE PLAYS runs through October 20th in Gordon Square. For tickets and information, head to CPTonline.org!
