As Rolling Stone reported it’s an interesting story how David Bowie and Bing Crosby came together to do one of the best versions of Little Drummer Boy (combined with Peace on Earth) out there. In fact, it almost didn’t happen.
Apparently David Bowie wasn’t really interested in appearing on Bing Crosby’s 42nd Annual (and last) Christmas Show, which was ridiculously mainstream. Bowie wasn’t exactly known for being normal back in the day… the appearance on Bing Crosby’s show was the artist’s attempt to mainstream his career.
They taped the show in September 1977. They rehearsed for less than an hour, during which, it was reported that Bowie begged to do any Christmas song – except Little Drummer Boy. What are the odds?
Sadly, one month after filming the special, Bing Crosby died at age 74. As we know, the odd duet’s song went on to become a stapled classic, that I know I don’t want to go a season without hearing.
