Written by husband and wife team Annabelle Gurwitch and Jeff Kahn, YOU SAY TOMATO, I SAY SHUT UP is a comedy that takes a voyeuristic look at the 10th anniversary dinner of…Annabelle and Jeff. As they reflect on the decade they’ve spent together, the goods and the bads, they break the 4th wall and talk directly to the audience about their true, at times gritty, feelings.
The show is funny, and the content is relatable to anyone who has ever been in a relationship. The script tries too hard to be funny at times, and other times knocks it out of the park. Especially during the section about sex after the birth of a baby. Oh yes, this production is loaded with adult themes and content.
At 75 minutes, YOU SAY TOMATO, I SAY SHUT UP is relatively short. The staging is simple, taking place in the restaurant where the couple, played by Kevin Bartini and Gabrielle Mirabella, is having their dinner, and through the use of sound effects and lighting changes you are transported into some of the couple’s memories.
YOU SAY TOMATO, I SAY SHUT UP is fun, laugh out loud funny, and will remind you that all couples experience disfunction, and that no relationship (including your own) is perfect. Tickets and info are available at PlayhouseSquare.org.
